What is CBD?

CBD or Cannabidiol is a naturally occurring chemical compound or cannabinoid that can be found in marijuana or cannabis. Including CBD, the cannabis plant contains 70 to 100 other cannabinoids. Most people have already heard about THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), a psychoactive cannabinoid that causes the “high effect”. After THC, CBD is the second most common cannabinoid, which on the other hand is generally not considered psychoactive.

Potential beneficial effects

Because of its physical impact, there are plenty of potential ways to use it. It may be taken orally, rubbed into the skin, either inhaled or taken intravenously.

Pain relief and anti-inflammatory effects

Usually people use prescription medicines when they have pain or inflammation. Many people think it is a more natural way to use CBD oil. According to the Journal of Experimental Medicine, CBD significantly reduced both inflammation and pain in experimental mice and rats. Many people say that some non-psychoactive elements of marijuana such as CBD can be used to reduce chronic pain.

Quitting smoking

There are some promising research on how CBD oil can help those who are trying to quit smoking. According to a study, those who use an inhaler with CBD are less likely to smoke and they don not feel the craving after the nicotine. It has also been shown to treat symptoms experienced by patients somewhat like anxiety, mood swings, insomnia or pain. These are not yet fully demonstrated, but they argue that the use of CBD oil can have a lot of beneficial effects.

Epilepsy and other mental problems

Scientists are also researching that CBD may have beneficial effects on people with epilepsy and some other mental illnesses. CBD has been shown to have antipyreticizing effects and its use have little risk for people with epilepsy. Other illnesses that may be associated with the disease can also be treated, for example, neurodegeneration or neural injury. According to Current Pharmaceutical Design, CBD has similar effects on some antipsychotic drugs, but are still not fully sure of how it works.

Cancer

CBD has been studied for some time to be used for cancer prevention. The British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology article states that CBD helps prevent cancer cells from spreading in the body. The CBD has, among other things, the effect of stop the increasing of cancer cells. It has also been emphasized that it can be used to treat cancer because it is not dangerous.

Anxiety

Generally, those who suffer from chronic anxiety are advised to avoid the marihuana, as THC may cause paranoia to some people. However, according to a study, CBD can have some beneficial effects on anxiety as well. Another study states that it helps on things like post-traumatic stress, panic attacks, anxiety, social phobia, or OCD. Medicines prescribed for these treatments often involve side effects that stops people from taking them, but CBD has not shown any side effects in thease cases. The question requires further research though.

First type of diabetes

According to Clinical Hemorheology and Microcirculation, CBD reduces inflammation in patients with first type of diabetes.

Pimples

Another promising research suggests that CBD may also affect acne, as these are largely caused by inflammations. CBD reduces the creation of an inflammatory agent in the body, helping the treatment of acne vulgaris, the most common type of acne.

Alzheimer’s disease

A research published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease states that CBD can help social recognition in patients. This means that the CBD may be capable of preventing patients from easily forget the faces they know in the early stages of Alzheimer’s.

Potential side effects and risks

Many smaller studies have investigated the effects of CBD on adults and they found that the dose we can take ranges on a wide scale. It did not have significant side effects on the central nervous system and did not cause mood swings. The most commonly reported side effect is fatigue, and some people have experienced diarrhea or weight and appetite changes. However, so far, there are very few reliable, long-term data on the issue, for example, children who have tried it have not been studied in the official medical framework.

How CBD works?

Each cannabinoid, including CBD, flows into the receptors in the body to exert its effect. The body itself produces some CBD-like substances and this molecule flows into two receptors, CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are found in every part of the body, but most are in the brain. It is responsible for example, for coordination and movement, for pain, emotions and mood, for appetite, for memories. THC binds to this receptor. CB2, however, is more common in the body, especially in inflammation and pain. Many believe CBD responds to the CB2 receptor, but they do not seem to directly interact with one another, but rather has the effect on the body to use more of its own cannabinoid.
